Does studying with games actually work?
Yes, with a measurable effect. A random-effects meta-analysis of gamified learning found a significant effect on cognitive learning outcomes (g = 0.49 across 19 studies), plus smaller effects on motivation (g = 0.36) and behavior (g = 0.25). The cognitive effect held up when the analysis was restricted to the studies with the most methodological rigor; the motivational and behavioral ones were less stable.

Why does answering questions beat rereading your notes?
Because retrieving something strengthens the memory, while rereading mostly strengthens your confidence. Students who took recall tests on a passage, with no feedback, out-remembered students who reread the same passage the same number of times — at two days and at one week. Rereading only won when the final test came five minutes later. This is the testing effect, and it is why ZykoStudy's games ask rather than show.

Is it better to study in one long session or several short ones?
Several short ones. A synthesis of 254 studies on distributed practice found that spreading the same total study time across separate sessions produces better recall than massing it into one block, and that longer gaps between sessions generally mean longer retention. Cramming does not fail because it is rushed; it fails because it is one session.

Which study techniques do researchers rate highest?
Practice testing and distributed practice — the only two of ten common techniques to earn a high-utility rating in a review for Psychological Science in the Public Interest. Highlighting, rereading, and summarizing all scored low, despite being the techniques students report relying on most. Quizzing yourself on spaced-out sessions is the evidence-backed core; everything else is decoration.

Do XP, badges, and streaks help learning, or just distract?
They help engagement more than they help memory, which is why they should sit on top of real recall rather than replace it. Gamification's measured effect on motivational outcomes (g = 0.36) is smaller and less stable than its effect on cognitive outcomes, and the cognitive gains come from the practice the game structures, not the points it awards. Are students actually disengaged from studying?
Broadly, yes. In Gallup and the Walton Family Foundation's Voices of Gen Z study of 1,687 students aged 13 to 18, only 50% agreed that school gives them the chance to do what they do best, and just over a third said they had not learned anything interesting in the past week. Disengagement is the baseline that any study tool is competing against.
